TrailKeeper Privacy Policy
Effective 2026-09-09 · JINSIM.LABS, Singapore
TrailKeeper is a free walking app that records GPS courses and lets you follow them again. It has no account system, no advertising, no analytics, and no server of its own. This page explains exactly what leaves your phone and why.
What stays on your phone
Everything you create in TrailKeeper is stored only on your device:
- Recorded walks and saved courses (GPS points, times, accuracy, names, notes, colours)
- Downloaded official-trail packs
- Settings
We cannot see this data. There is no cloud copy. Uninstalling the app, or deleting a course inside it, removes it permanently.
What is sent over the internet, and to whom
TrailKeeper makes only the network requests needed to draw a map and to tidy a recorded track onto real paths. None of these include your name, an account, or a device identifier.
| Request | When | What is sent | Recipient |
|---|---|---|---|
| Map tiles | Whenever the map is on screen | The map area you are looking at (tile coordinates) | OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org), with VersaTiles (versatiles.org) as fallback |
| Snap to paths | When you save a recorded course with Snap to paths turned on (the default), or choose Edit → Snap to paths | A thinned set of points from that recording (about one every 60 m) | BRouter (brouter.de) and, for short tracks, the OSRM demo server (routing.openstreetmap.de) |
| Plan a route / Extend a course | When you draw a course or extend one to a station | The points you placed | BRouter, with OSRM as fallback |
| Official trail packs | When you download a region | The region name | Vercel (our static file host) |
The routing servers process each request and return a route; they are operated by third parties under their own policies. TrailKeeper sends them the minimum needed for the request and nothing that identifies you. If you prefer not to send a recording anywhere, turn off "Snap to paths when saving" in the save sheet; the track is then saved exactly as recorded.
Location permission
TrailKeeper asks for precise location so it can record where you walk and show your position on a course. Recording continues while the screen is off, using an Android foreground service with a visible notification. Location is never accessed when you are not recording, following, or looking at the map, and it is never sent to us. We do not request background-location permission.
Notifications
The recording notification shows distance, time and GPS status on the lock screen. It is silent and disappears when you stop recording.
Sharing
When you share a course as an image or GPX, TrailKeeper hands the file to the app you choose (Messages, WhatsApp, Drive, etc.). What happens next is governed by that app. The optional "hide start and end" setting trims the first and last stretch before sharing.
Children
TrailKeeper is not directed at children under 13 and collects no personal information from anyone.
Deleting your data
Delete a course or walk inside the app, or uninstall the app. Because nothing is stored on a server, there is nothing further to request from us. Questions: jinsimlabs@jinsimlabs.com.
Changes
